Curriculum Work
Planning out a course, unit, lessons, and assessments
Below are samples of curriculum work from a World History course aligned to North Carolina essential standards. I enjoy designing work for World History because [insert reason]. The work below is based on a 90 day semester block.

I employ a fairly traditional approach to world history (chronological & geographical), with a thematic focus per unit. Each unit also aligns to the C3 Framework for social studies. My overall goal is to provide students with a curriculum that focuses on the critical thinking skills they can use after high school.

Unit Map - Mesoamerican Civilizations
The Mesoamerican Native Americans have had a profound impact on Central America even to this day. Students will have a first-hand approach to how the natives of Mesoamerica lived, their religious beliefs, and the foods they ate. Students will end the week with a meal of authentic Mesoamerican foods.
Lesson 1 - The Olmec Civilization
The Olmec native civilization is arguably the oldest in Mesoamerica. Students will have a chance to explore ancient Olmec ruins and layouts of their once grand cites. Students will then learn and explore other ancient Mesoamerican ruins.
Lesson 2 - Toltecs
The Toltecs are a very warlike society and are closely related to the Aztecs. Students will have the chance to compare them to ancient Sparta. Students will end the lesson with basic knowledge of Mesoamerican religion.
Lesson 3 - Mayan Civilization
The Mayans are arguably the most famous Mesoamerican tribe. They have become famous through their calendar and that is the center of this lesson. Students will learn the basics of how to read it and learn how to use it.
Lesson 4 - Foods of the Early Mesoamerican Civilizations
Food! Every student knows and loves to hear. That is the center of this lesson and students will learn about the various foods that the natives of Mesoamerica ate. Students will be allowed to get food and at the end of the lesson, an open note quiz turned group work quiz will then be assigned.
Assessment Samples

My overall approach to the lessons is to make sure that the students take one thing out of all the lessons. The assessments are similar are designed with the thought of checking to see where the students are at and making sure they are mastering the material to the best of their ability.
